The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
